Teresa Horgan & Matt Griffin "Brightest Sky Blue"

Teresa Horgan & Matt Griffin \"Brightest Sky Blue\"
Teresa Horgan and Matt Griffin have crafted a delicious slice of folk heaven on this debut recording. Its instant appeal comes from the addition of some well-orchestrated arrangements with strings and woodwind. Even so, without this extra element it would still be a good folk album. With it, however, you have the best vocal album of the year so far. There are other elements that add to the mix; the layers of hushed harmonies on the opening Cruel Sister with the instrumental flourishes between phrases that push it along. There is also a subtle pop feel to parts, with Horgan’s voice restrained but still finding depth in the material. Kathy’s Song by Paul Simon adheres to a strong guitar baseline, and on that, a laid-back vocal gives the song its meaning. On As I Roved Out Teresa’s voice anchors the song, keeping it gloriously simple. The lush string intro to Fair Flowers of the Valley and the arrangement that follows is a stand out track. If you are going to invest in one vocal album this year, this might be it. Rewarding on so many levels.
