David Munnelly Band

Swinging tradition

You do not have to hear him. It’s good enough to see David Munnelly to be sure: This man is an original, a character slightly against the norm and with a flame burning inside. He is the real thing from Co. Mayo. When it comes to playing jigs & reels he seems to explode on the accordion. He squeezes, pushes, pulls and caresses his instrument to create an array of colourful sounds, which is spine tingling for the listener. His nickname “the bullet from Belmullet” is well deserved. His music aims straight for your heart.

Do you know the old saying? Birds of a feather flock together. This applies very much to David’s band. They are all made out of the same stuff. His brother Kieran is a superb flute and bodhran player and the duets of the two brothers are exceptional. Paul Kelly is one of the leading Irish mandolin and fiddle players, the guitarist Philippe Barnes and pianist Ryan Molloy make up an unique rhythm section, but the best comes last. It is the mellow alto voice of Shauna Mullins from Donegal. Her voice is as equally blessed with energy as emotion to deliver fast rousing and also slow sentimental songs.

This great band has a couple of trademarks but probably the most distinguished one is the “sound of the roaring twenties”. This sound is associated with the Irish immigration to America where in the golden twenties Irish musicians got inspired by listening to the swing of the big bands. By making this special sound a part of their set David Munnelly band keeps this great “swinging tradition” alive.
